Chemical-free and women-led — turning kitchen plots and SHG land into a source of both healthier food and steadier income.

Capacity-building training on organic vegetable cultivation
Vegetable cultivation is an important agricultural activity that provides food, employment and income to rural households. In view of increasing awareness about safe, nutritious and healthy food, there is a growing need to promote cultivation practices that maintain soil health while reducing unnecessary dependence on chemical inputs.
The Foundation has therefore promoted organic vegetable cultivation among rural communities, particularly women and members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs), as a means of strengthening sustainable livelihoods. A capacity-building programme was organized for SHG members to improve their knowledge and skills in organic vegetable production and to encourage them to adopt environmentally responsible farming practices.
The programme emphasized efficient use of inputs, including appropriate seed selection, reduced use of chemical fertilizers and plant-protection chemicals, and judicious management of water. Farmers were encouraged to make greater use of locally available organic resources and natural methods of maintaining soil fertility and managing pests.
With support and coordination from the District Horticulture Department and District Agriculture Department of Angul and Balangir, the Foundation facilitated the adoption of organic vegetable cultivation among farmers in its operational areas. The initiative also focused on regular interaction with farmers and practical guidance on crop management.
Farmers received guidance on important aspects such as pest management, preparation and use of organic manure, organic farming practices and appropriate irrigation. Regular meetings and field-level interactions helped farmers understand the practical application of these methods and address their cultivation-related concerns.
At Kushmel Panchayat of Balangir District, farmers adopted organic vegetable cultivation practices following awareness and capacity-building activities. Continued interaction with farmers helped them gain practical knowledge regarding pest management, preparation and application of organic manure, organic cultivation methods and water management.
A local farmer, Mr. Abani Sarangi of Phatabahal village, who also worked as a Community Resource Person (CRP) for the Social Development Foundation, supported the awareness process by communicating with small and marginal farmers. He shared information on the benefits and practical aspects of organic farming with farmers in Phatabahal Gram Panchayat of Loisingha Block, Balangir District.
The overall objectives of promoting organic farming among women farmers included:
- 1To develop a sustainable agricultural system capable of ensuring adequate food production in the foreseeable future.
- 2To promote a self-reliant agricultural system that makes maximum possible use of resources available within the farming system itself.
- 3To promote an alternative to excessive chemical-based farming by encouraging agricultural practices that are compatible with natural biological processes and ecological conditions.
Through these interventions, the Foundation seeks to strengthen farmers' knowledge, encourage sustainable use of natural resources, improve soil health and support safer and more environmentally responsible agricultural practices.
